This is an extensive young adult literature resource handbook filled with booklists, author information, Web resources, and ideas for enriching your classroom or library program.
This book is a very helpful listing of the resources that emerged
for 2010. The information can be complemented with a seminar
presented by Sharron L. McElmeel -- her extensive background, expansion
of information about the books listed in the handbook, stories behind
the stories, author notes, and information about using them in the
classroom/library will provide an energetic look at great new books for
teen readers. A full-day seminar from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

REVIEW of the 2005 edition --- by Shari Fesko (VOYA, April 2006 (Vol. 29, No. 1))
Those new to teaching or youth librarianship will welcome this information-packed albeit slender volume. McElmeel
is a professor and past teacher who now does seminars on the best
current literature, both fiction and nonfiction. Her expertise is
definitely on display here, and this reviewer was especially impressed
with her detailed explanations of a variety of young adult awards and
notables lists. She first focuses on award-winning titles from the past
year before moving on to other topics such as graphic novels, poetry,
and audiobooks for teens. McElmeel
keeps her lists very manageable and her summaries short and concise,
making this resource appropriate even to give to younger teens wishing
to search for some good reads on their own. She also includes
little-known tidbits about specific authors and titles in highlighted
boxes throughout the various lists. This breaks up the list format,
giving a little more interest but still keeping it readable. In
addition, she gives a variety of useful online links to further assist
teens and professionals in the ever changing world of YA literature.
The only faults here are a few glaring grammatical mistakes that do not
take away from the value of this title. McElmeel
is really aiming her work at teachers and media specialists as she
talks at length about curriculum connections, including a whole chapter
on "book packaging" or grouping titles together by specific themes such
as slavery. This slim book is recommended for public librarians wishing
to expand their knowledge and their patrons knowledge of the variety of
materials available. 2005, Hi Willow (Dist. By LMC Source), 91p., $18
pb. Ages adult professional.
