| Stephen |
November 28, 1846 Pennsylvania Death December 28, 1912 Buried in Burley, Idaho |
Stephen was born a month and one day after his brother Martin died. Documents (obituaries of other family members etc.) indicate that Stephen was residing in Silver city, Idaho from approximately 1880 to at least 1908 and perhaps beyond that date. Burley and Silver City are 187 miles apart so it appears that at some point (after 1908) he did move to Burley (further East) where he is buried. From the Owyhee Avalanche, L.A. York, Publisher; July 7, 1899 McELMEEL, MR. STEPHEN, was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, November 28, 1848. In 1855 his parents moved to near Dubuque, Iowa, where he received a limited schooling, and at an early age engaged in farming. Left home in 1869, and was for about five years engaged in engineering along the line of the Union Pacific railroad. Arrived at Silver City in 1874, and since then has been engaged in engineering, mining and prospecting up to present date. He took a prominent part in the Indian fight of 1878, and during that summer was one of the principal scouts of the Purdy party. |
