Verna Roxanna Akers (1886-1955)
Verna Roxanna Akers was born on May 4, 1886 in Delaware County, Iowa. Her parents Elmer Newton Akersand Nancy Dursela Midkiff were living in Hazel Green Township. On January 10, 1904 Verna Akers married Martin John McElmeel
and they moved to a farm in Delaware Township, Delaware County, Iowa.
After Martin's death in 1932, Verna stayed in Delaware Township for
another 15 years or so. Around 1947 she moved to Dyersville and later
moved to Earlville, Iowa where she died on October 20, 1955.
In 1983, her only living daughter, Verona McElmeel March remembered her
parents with these words, "My father was a farmer. He farmed in the
vicinities of Delhi and Ryan. My father and mother were both reserved
people. They enjoyed entertaining neighbors and relatives in their
home. Both father and mother were interested in the education of their
children. Reading was their most important hobby. Both enjoyed music.
Mother played the piano and organ. She played organ for church services
and father played the harmonica.

Robert March on June 30, 1936 in St. John's Roman Catholic Church in
Delhi, Delaware County, Iowa. The family lived in Earlville, Cascade,
Manchester, and finally settled in Dyersville, Iowa. They had five
daughters:

Lloyd was in the monastery prior to his marriage to Alice. After his
death at the age of 33, his widow, Alice, married to Charles Hunsinger.
Their daughter Patricia grew up and was married to Michael Salmo. They
lived in the St. Louis, Missouri area.
