Martin John McElmeel (1881-1932)
Martin John McElmeel was born in Milo Township, Delaware County, Iowa
on January 23, 1881. He lived on the parental farm until 1904, when at
the age of 23 he married and moved to Delaware Township, Delaware
County, Iowa. He married Verna Roxanne Akers (b. May 4, 1886) on
January 10, 1904. He lived in Delaware County for the remainder of his
life. He died at the age of 51 and is buried in St. John's Catholic
Cemetery in Delhi, Delaware County, Iowa. In 1983, his only living
daughter, Verona McElmeel March remembered her parents with these
words, "My father was a farmer. he farmed in the vicinities of Delhi
and Ryan. My father and mother were both reserved people. They enjoyed
entertaining neighbors and relatives in their home. Both father and
mother were interested in the education of their children. Reading was
their most important hobby. Both enjoyed music. Mother played the piano
and organ. She played organ for church services and father played the
harmonica."

Verona was born in Delhi, Iowa on February 18, 1913. She married
Robert March on June 30, 1936 in St. John's Roman Catholic Church in
Delhi, Delaware County, Iowa. The family lived in Earlville, Cascade,
Manchester, and finally settled in Dyersville, Iowa. They had five
daughters:

Lloyd was in the monastery prior to his marriage to Alice. After his
death at the age of 33, his widow, Alice, married to Charles Hunsinger.
Their daughter Patricia grew up and was married to Michael Salmo. They
lived in the St. Louis, Missouri area.
