Leo Leland Joseph Hanson, 80, of 808 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, died
Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, in Mercy Medical Center after a brief
illness. Services: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Pius X Catholic Church, by
the Rev. Donald Klein. Burial: Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from
4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Teahen Funeral Home,
where a rosary begins at 6 p.m. Friday.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen; two sons, Dwayne
(Belinda) Hanson of Nevada, Iowa, and Keith of Boca Raton, Fla.; two
daughters, Sharron (E.J. "Jack") McElmeel and Joyce Hanson, both of
Cedar Rapids; 12 grandchildren: Denise (Mark) Swanson, Sandra (Eric)
Johnston, Brian, Shawn and Dustin Hanson; Michael (Starr Little
Soldier), Deborah, Thomas, Matthew, Steven and Suzanne McElmeel and
Katherine Hanson; and seven great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Matthew
Swanson, Rebecca and Victoria Johnston and Mick, Jade and Aubrey
McElmeel .
He was preceded in death by three brothers, LaFayette, Earl and Arnold
Hansen; and two sisters, Bernice Johnson and Evelyn Bertling.
Born Dec. 23, 1917, near Lamont, to Peter and Catherine "Carrie" Crim
Hansen, he married Helen Ada Miller on Sept. 10, 1938, in Walker, Iowa.
Leo farmed with his wife near Ely, Walker, Masonville, Delhi and
Hopkinton. In addition to farming, they managed several dance halls in
the northeast Iowa area, forming lasting friendships with members of
many bands. He retired in 1986. He was a member of Knights of Columbus,
Monticello Lions Club and St. Pius X Catholic Church.
In 1991, Leo and his wife moved to Cedar Rapids, where he enjoyed
gardening and grew beautiful roses. Since 1994, their winters have been
spent in Boca Raton, Fla. Leo enjoyed traveling and often made trips to
Colorado, Nevada, California and Arizona. His lifetime love of music
took him frequently to Branson, Mo., and Nashville, Tenn. For the last
several years Leo and Helen have helped at the Camp Courageous
Breakfast held twice yearly.
